Dr. Petruk received his medical doctorate from the University of Alberta in 1967. He aslo completed a PhD in experimental surgery at the University of Alberta where he conducted research in post-subarachnoid hemorrhage vasospasm.

Dr. Petruk is the current clinical professor and the director of neurosurgery at the University of Alberta. He also has a strong research and clinical interest in molecular / surgical neurooncology and cerebrovascular neurosurgery. He became a member of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada in Neurosurgery in 1977.

Dr. Petruk is also the Director of Moleular Neurooncology and has strong research track record in the study of mechanisms invovled in cancer cell apoptosis, anticancer vaccines (dendritic cell / immunoadjuvant therapies for malignant gliomas and melanomas) and erythropoietin therapy in severe traumatic brain injury.
